turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day.”

The singer did not disclose the causes of death for Patricia Carey, who was reportedly 87, or Alison Carey, who was 63 and lived in Coxsackie, New York, according to a Times Union article.

“I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” Carey added. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Patricia Carey was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and a vocal coach. She was married to Mariah Carey’s father, Alfred Roy, until they separated when Mariah was three years old. Alfred Roy passed away in 2002.

In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the singer discussed her “complicated” relationship with her mother, acknowledging that their journey together was marked by “contradictions and competing realities.” Despite the challenges in their relationship, Mariah dedicated part of her memoir to her mother, writing, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”

Mariah Carey was reportedly estranged from her sister Alison Carey, who sued her in 2021 for intentional infliction of emotional distress, citing details in Mariah's memoir. According to the lawsuit filed in New York, Alison claimed that her younger sister used the book to “humiliate and embarrass” her. Mariah Carey did not file a legal response to the claim, according to online court records.

Mariah Carey is one of three children. In addition to Alison, Patricia Carey was also the mother of Morgan Carey.
