Poll News: Majority Supports Deportations While More Democrats Oppose Immigration

According to an August poll conducted by YouGov, 56% of registered voters support a policy of "arresting and deporting thousands of illegal immigrants." In contrast, only 35% of voters oppose this repatriation policy. The poll, conducted from August 25 to 27, surveyed 1,555 adult citizens and voters.

The growing opposition to migration among Democrats reflects a shift from previous acceptance to increasing rejection during President Joe Biden's term, marked by significant immigration into American communities. This surge has led to a population increase of approximately 10 million people, arriving through various legal and illegal means.

This rising opposition is bolstering former President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign, as he pledges to deport millions of illegal migrants and prevent further immigration. In contrast, Vice President Kamala Harris has not opposed the influx of migrants promoted by West Coast Democratic donors, which has affected American communities, workplaces, schools, and hospitals.

According to an interactive YouGov poll, the percentage of Americans who believe "immigrants are a drain on national resources" rose from 30% in June 2020 to 43% in December 2023, while those who disagreed with this statement dropped from 46% to 32%. This represents a 26-point shift over three years. Notably, about a quarter of Americans remain neutral on the issue.

Among Democrats, the change has been even more pronounced. The share of Democrats who disagreed with the statement that "immigrants are a drain on national resources" dropped from 70% to 47%, while those who agreed increased from 13% to 31%. This reflects a 40-point shift in opinion among Democrats from June 2020 to December 2023.

Despite this shift, Democratic leaders continue to advocate for high levels of immigration, emphasizing the importance of diversity in building a robust democracy. Former President Barack Obama highlighted this at the Democratic Party’s national convention, emphasizing America's unique position in trying to create a diverse democracy.

Among Republicans, attitudes toward immigration have remained relatively stable since June 2020. The share of Republicans who disagree that "immigrants are a drain on national resources" has stayed around 18.5%, while those who agree increased from 56% to 65%.

Other YouGov polls indicate a growing perception that immigration is detrimental to the nation, with 38% of respondents in a June poll stating that immigration makes the country "worse off," compared to 28% who believe it makes the country "better off." This reflects a significant 30-point shift against migration since Biden took office.

The August YouGov poll also found that immigration is the most important issue for 15% of registered voters, second only to inflation and prices, which is a concern for 23% of voters. Immigration is a priority for 15% of men and 11% of women, including 11% of independents
