As election day approaches, a non-profit migrant shelter in San Antonio, Texas, has seen a significant increase in the number of migrants it houses, with nearly 12,500 individuals sheltered since October 1, 2024. This rise in numbers comes as Texas border cities experience a surge in migrant crossings.
The San Antonio Migrant Resource Center, a partnership between the City of San Antonio and various non-profit organizations, including Catholic Charities, has been providing critical support since its opening in 2022. The center has assisted nearly half a million migrants by helping them secure transportation out of the city.
On Wednesday, Texas officials visited the San Antonio Migrant Resource Center, observing buses arriving from the border region to drop off migrants at the well-secured facility. The city provides police presence to manage access and maintain order around the center.
Venezuelan nationals represent the largest group served by the center, with over 60,000 receiving shelter since its opening in July 2022. Following them are Nicaraguans, with more than 26,000, while Cubans, Hondurans, Haitians, and Colombians round out the top six groups, totaling 78,393 migrants since the facility’s inception. The center has also sheltered individuals from countries flagged by the FBI and DHS as Special Interest Aliens.
The facility, originally slated to exhaust federal funds in March 2024, received an extension after President Joe Biden signed a $1.2 trillion funding package. This allocation included $650 million in FEMA Shelter and Services Program (SSP) funds for non-governmental shelters, with nearly $17 million directed to San Antonio’s Migrant Resource Center and partnering non-profits.
*Breitbart Texas* also reports a rise in migrant crossings, including Special Interest Aliens and unaccompanied children, in Eagle Pass, Texas, about 150 miles west of San Antonio. After processing, many of these migrants are transported to the San Antonio center, where plans for further travel within the U.S. are coordinated.
