Amish voters could play a pivotal role in helping former President Donald Trump secure Pennsylvania in the upcoming presidential election.
Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-PA), who was raised in an Amish community, shared with Fox News that more Amish have shifted from traditional farming to running businesses, leading them to become “much more engaged politically.”
“A minority of the Amish are still involved in agriculture,” Smucker told Fox News, noting that Lancaster County’s limited farmland has pushed many Amish to pursue business ventures. “There’s a new generation of Amish who are successful business owners — some managing large enterprises. As a result, they’re becoming much more engaged politically than their parents were.”
Rep. Lloyd Smucker highlighted the Amish community's reputation for a “great work ethic,” “strong family values,” and a “strong sense of community.” He explained, “They help one another, rallying around any community member in need. It’s about strong individual responsibility, a tight-knit family unit, and a supportive local community or church. With that structure, they don’t want big government interfering, and that’s exactly how the Amish view it.” Smucker noted a significant shift in the Amish community’s political engagement, which he expects will continue growing.
Fox News cited a report from Elizabethtown College, estimating around 90,000 Amish in Pennsylvania and 84,000 in Ohio, with additional communities in Indiana, Wisconsin, New York, and Missouri. Smucker noted that “four years ago,” his district saw 1,500 to 2,000 new Amish voter registrations and anticipates “thousands more this cycle.”
The outlet also pointed out that former President George W. Bush sought the Amish vote, meeting with Amish leaders privately, without photographers present.
During the 2020 presidential election, images and videos of an Amish horse-and-buggy caravan decorated with Trump and American flags gained widespread attention online.
According to The Center Square, conservative activist Scott Presler has been reaching out to the Amish community, emphasizing that Republicans will safeguard their interests, such as “raw milk” dairy farming, school choice, and religious freedom. Speaking at a Trump rally, Presler stated, “To our beautiful Amish in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and across the state, we will protect your raw milk, your dairy, your farming, your school choice, your religious freedom, and your ability to have ten beautiful children per family.”
