On Thursday's episode of "Newsnight," CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale pointed out inaccuracies in Vice President Kamala Harris's remarks about fracking during an interview with anchor Dana Bash.

Dale explained, “The fact check bottom line is that she did not actually make clear at a 2020 debate that she had changed her previous support for a fracking ban. So let me take you through this kind of saga.”

He referred to a 2019 CNN climate town hall where Harris was directly asked if she would commit to implementing a federal ban on fracking. At the time, Harris responded, “There’s no question I’m in favor of banning fracking, yes.” This statement clearly indicated her support for a ban on fracking.

Dale continued, “She ended her 2020 presidential run in December 2019. The only debate she participated in during 2020 was the vice-presidential debate with then-Vice President Mike Pence. I reviewed the transcript of that debate, and at no point does she clearly state that she abandoned her earlier stance on a fracking ban. Instead, she reiterated that Joe Biden, the head of the Democratic ticket at the time, would not ban fracking."

During the 2020 vice-presidential debate, Harris stated, “Joe Biden will not ban fracking; he has been very clear about that. I will repeat, and the American people know that Joe Biden will not ban fracking.”

Dale concluded, “While it makes sense that she was speaking on behalf of Biden, who would set administration policy, I did not hear her personally renounce her 2019 position. Rather, she was articulating Joe Biden’s stance.”
