Election 2024 Live Updates: Trump Criticizes Harris’ Racial Identity; Harris Set to Eulogize Sheila Jackson Lee

Today, Vice President Kamala Harris will deliver a eulogy in Houston for Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, who passed away last month from cancer. President Joe Biden, who also has a close connection to Jackson Lee, paid his respects in Texas yesterday. Biden and Harris both have personal ties to her—Biden having served with her in Congress for many years, and Harris being a member of the same historically Black sorority.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has been making controversial remarks about Harris' racial identity. Speaking at a panel with Black journalists in Chicago yesterday, Trump stated, "I did not know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black." Harris, of Indian and Jamaican descent, has faced these attacks amid ongoing discussions about her identity.

In a related campaign move, Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance, will visit the southern border in Arizona today. This visit is part of a broader campaign strategy to portray Harris as ineffective on immigration issues.
