49ers WR Ricky Pearsall Released from Hospital After Shooting During Robbery Attempt

Pearsall, 23, has been upgraded to fair condition after initially being reported as "serious but stable" in a team statement on Saturday night.

"San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was discharged from the hospital this afternoon as he continues to recover from a chest wound," the team said in a statement on Sunday. "He and his family, along with the entire San Francisco 49ers organization, would like to extend their gratitude to the San Francisco Police Department, emergency medical services, and the staff at San Francisco General Hospital."

In a social media post, his mother, Erin Pearsall, expressed profound relief, calling her son "extremely lucky."

"First and foremost, I want to thank GOD for protecting my baby boy," she wrote on Facebook. "He is extremely lucky; GOD shielded him. He was shot in the chest, with the bullet exiting his back. Thankfully, it missed his vital organs. My son was spared today by the grace of GOD."

The suspect in the attempted robbery, a 17-year-old from Tracy, Calif., was apprehended on Saturday as he tried to flee the scene, according to San Francisco Police Chief William Scott. The alleged gunman was also hospitalized, though his condition has not been disclosed, and charges are pending.

Pearsall was transported to San Francisco General Hospital. Social media footage from Union Square showed a shirtless Pearsall walking gingerly to an ambulance with police assistance. As he sat on a gurney, blood was visible as he used his left hand to press his shirt against his chest.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the 911 call was received at 3:28 p.m. local time. When police arrived, they found two gunshot victims: Pearsall and the alleged robber, who was shot during a struggle with Pearsall over the gun.

"A struggle between Mr. Pearsall and the suspect ensued, and gunfire from the suspect’s weapon struck both Mr. Pearsall and the suspect," Police Chief William Scott stated during a Saturday news briefing.

Aaron Peskin, president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, noted that Pearsall fought back during the incident, based on police briefings.

Earlier in the day, Pearsall had been signing autographs at an event before heading to Union Square, as reported by ABC 7 San Francisco.

The 49ers drafted Pearsall, a wide receiver who will turn 24 on September 9, with the 31st pick in April's draft. He signed a four-year, $12.5 million guaranteed contract, including a $5.9 million signing bonus.

Pearsall has had limited participation in training camp due to shoulder and hamstring issues, missing all three preseason games. He has a history of shoulder problems dating back to his college days at Florida.
