Abby Phillip on Meta’s Policy Shift: ‘Nobody Wants Facebook to Be a Free Speech Panacea’

During Tuesday’s broadcast of CNN NewsNight, host Abby Phillip commented on Meta’s recent changes to its fact-checking and content moderation practices. She questioned the premise behind calls for more free speech on Facebook, stating, "I don’t know that anybody was saying there is not enough free speech on Facebook."

Phillip added that Facebook’s user base skews older, noting, "First of all, not a lot of people younger than 35 are using Facebook anymore anyway. Nobody wants Facebook to be this free speech panacea." She suggested the push for looser content policies seems driven primarily by "a Trump-focused narrative that there is a speech problem on certain social media platforms."

Phillip expressed no objection to the use of community notes for contextualizing content but argued that Facebook would be better served by diversifying the geographic locations of its content moderators. "Putting them only in Texas," she pointed out, "introduces biases just like any other place would."

Later, she noted that data indicates Facebook remains popular among conservatives, contradicting claims that right-leaning voices are marginalized on the platform.
