Officials are investigating the death of a woman on the opening day of the 2024 Burning Man Festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, about 100 miles north of Reno.
Sheriff Jerry Allen stated, “Kendra’s cause and manner of death are still pending results of an autopsy and toxicology screening. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kendra’s family and friends.”
The festival has experienced tragic incidents in the past. Last year, Leon Reece of Truckee, California, died at the scene, as reported by DFGate.com.
The 2024 Burning Man Festival began on August 25, but the event faced a temporary delay due to a rainstorm that affected the area. Officials halted traffic to allow the ground to drain.
This year, festival organizers expect over 70,000 attendees, with various attractions available, including an “orgy dome.” According to the Daily Star, this “air-conditioned sex haven” offers opportunities for participants to engage in sexual activities with groups of two or more people. Operators of the dome ensure that participants are sober enough to consent.
The Daily Star also noted that one attendee mentioned how observing others in the dome made it easier to feel comfortable participating herself. Other activities at the festival include group orgasm sessions, daily whippings, and naked oil wrestling.
Last year’s festival was marred by chaos as heavy rains turned the area into a muddy mess, closing roads and forcing hundreds of participants to walk for miles to exit the event. It took days to clear the vehicles from the conditions.
