Another LeBron James triple-double leads Lakers to third win in a row

LeBron James has eased into his 21st season, initially deferring to teammates like Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves, embracing a more patient approach. Whether it was out of respect for a new process or a subtle acknowledgment of age catching up, it seemed like James was taking a backseat. But as the season progresses, it's clear that James is still the driving force for the Lakers.

On Wednesday, he delivered a remarkable performance, leading the Lakers to a 128-123 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. When the offense faltered, he stepped up, scoring 35 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and dishing out 14 assists for his third consecutive triple-double—key to maintaining the Lakers’ momentum. It marked the fourth time in his career that he achieved a triple-double streak of three games, with 10 of the 11 oldest players to record a triple-double at this stage of their careers being James.

"It's about being patient and taking what the defense gives me," James explained. "I understand the game, the timing, and how things swing, so it's nothing new to me." His poise and experience were evident as he kept the Lakers in the game despite challenges, including a 15-point lead slipping away and Anthony Davis dealing with foul trouble.

The Lakers started strong, attacking Memphis with sharp passing and defensive improvements after their last meeting. But their early momentum faded, and the Grizzlies—missing key players Ja Morant and Desmond Bane—caught fire, outscoring the Lakers by 17 points in the second and third quarters.

Despite the struggles, the Lakers remained competitive, largely due to James’ leadership and contributions from Rui Hachimura and rookie Dalton Knecht. Knecht, in particular, had a career-high 19 points, making all five of his three-point attempts. "I trust my shot, and my teammates know that," Knecht said, emphasizing his confidence and the trust his teammates have in him.

When Davis returned late in the game with five fouls, his two clutch three-pointers helped seal the win. This victory marked the Lakers’ best home start since 2010, as they aim for their sixth straight win at home to begin the season.

Next up, the Lakers will begin group play in the NBA Cup against the Spurs on Friday in San Antonio.
