"Fetterman slams Gaetz’s choice: 'Ultimate trolling to provoke a meltdown'"

U.S. Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.) criticized President-elect Trump’s decision to nominate Rep. Matt Gaetz as attorney general, calling it “God-tier trolling.”

In a conversation with reporters, Fetterman remarked that while some of Trump’s appointments were commendable, Gaetz did not make the cut in his view. “It’s like a master-level move just to provoke a meltdown,” he said. “But honestly, it’s not the Democrats’ reactions to Gaetz that are interesting. The real intrigue will be watching my GOP colleagues try to justify voting for that guy.”

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) expressed a mix of approval and skepticism toward President-elect Trump’s latest cabinet nominations, praising the selections of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) for secretary of state and Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) for ambassador to the United Nations as “serious picks.” However, Fetterman took a notably different stance on Trump’s choice of Rep. Matt Gaetz as attorney general, describing it as “nothing but trolling.”

Fetterman suggested that there were more qualified options, pointing to Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), who previously served as Missouri’s attorney general, as a stronger candidate. “Schmitt would have been a solid pick. And then you put out someone like [Gaetz],” he said. “The interesting answers will come from my GOP colleagues as they attempt to justify voting for that mess.”

Gaetz’s path to Senate confirmation is expected to be challenging, with Republicans set to meet privately to discuss Trump’s selections.

A Republican senator, speaking anonymously to **Fox News Digital**, voiced doubt over Rep. Matt Gaetz’s potential confirmation as attorney general, saying, “He will never get confirmed.” Another GOP source echoed the sentiment: “Ain’t gonna happen.”

Gaetz resigned from the House on Wednesday following Trump’s announcement of his nomination. His resignation comes amid an ongoing House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, drug use, and acceptance of improper gifts.

Rep. Michael Guest (R-Miss.), chair of the Ethics Committee, clarified the implications of Gaetz’s departure, noting, “Once a member is no longer in Congress, ethics has no jurisdiction. So, if Matt
Gaetz were appointed as attorney general, the ongoing ethics investigation would cease.”

In addition to the ongoing ethics investigation, Rep. Matt Gaetz was previously the subject of a yearslong Department of Justice (DOJ) probe into allegations of sex trafficking. However, last year, Gaetz’s office confirmed that the DOJ had concluded its investigation and determined that he would not face any charges.
