Hunter Biden changed his plea to guilty before his trial began Thursday morning, according to his attorney Abbe Lowell. This strategic move enables him to avoid a nearly one-month trial filled with potentially damaging testimony.
The revised plea deal may fuel speculation that President Joe Biden could eventually pardon or commute his son's sentence.
The announcement came just before jury selection was scheduled to begin, causing the court to go into recess. "The conditions of the plea were not immediately disclosed, nor was it clear if the judge would accept Biden's attempt to avoid a trial and proceed directly to sentencing," according to a report by NBC News.
Federal prosecutor Leo Wise stated, “this is the first we are hearing about this,”'
as reported by Fox News.
Special Counsel David Weiss indicted Hunter Biden in December on nine tax-related charges, including three felonies: failure to file taxes, tax evasion, and filing fraudulent forms. The most serious charges relate to 2018, including tax evasion, filing a false personal tax return, and filing a false corporate tax return.
To secure a conviction, prosecutors must prove that Biden "willfully" broke the law. If convicted, he could face up to 17 years in prison.
