Outgoing President Joe Biden is set to address the nation on Thursday following President-elect Donald Trump’s surprising election victory, which will return the Republican to the White House.
At 81, President Joe Biden was effectively pushed out of the race against Donald Trump by his own party in July, ceding the Democratic nomination to Vice President Kamala Harris. Now, with Trump’s stunning comeback, Biden’s legacy—and much of what he has accomplished—may face dismantling under the incoming administration.
The White House reported that Biden spoke with Trump on Wednesday, expressing his commitment to a smooth transition and emphasizing the importance of working toward unity for the country.
Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung stated that Trump “looks forward to the meeting, which will take place shortly, and very much appreciated the call.”
This would mark the first time the two have met since Biden’s challenging debate performance against Trump in June, a turning point that led to Biden's departure from the race. In the months since, Biden has been largely sidelined by Vice President Kamala Harris’s team and was notably absent from the Election Night gathering, suggesting a further strain in their relationship, as previously reported by Breitbart News.
While both Biden and Trump prepare for the transfer of power, strict guidelines define the process ahead. President-elect Trump will be sworn in on Jan. 20, as required by the Constitution’s 20th Amendment, officially assuming the presidency at that time.
