With just over two months remaining before the November presidential election, a recent Border Patrol report reveals a modest increase in migrant apprehensions at the southwest border. According to the report, Border Patrol agents apprehended slightly more than 58,000 migrants in August, up from around 56,000 in July.
The El Paso Sector saw an increase, moving to second place with nearly 13,300 apprehensions in August, up from 12,000 in July. The Tucson Sector’s numbers remained stable, with about 12,000 apprehensions in both months.
The rise in apprehensions comes amid declining approval ratings for President Biden and Vice President Harris on immigration and border security issues. In January, actions by the Mexican government resulted in a significant decrease in migrant apprehensions, dropping from nearly 250,000 in December to 124,215. For context, the highest number of apprehensions during the Trump administration was in May 2019, with 132,856 migrants.
The July and August reports indicate the lowest apprehension numbers under the Biden-Harris administration. Comparatively, the lowest number during the Trump administration occurred in April 2020, with only 16,182 apprehensions.
A CBP official told Americanbrief Texas in February that Mexico’s actions are not a long-term solution, noting that migrants are simply being delayed from reaching the U.S. border. “The migrants are being moved further south, delaying their efforts to seek asylum in the U.S.,” the source stated.
