**Rep. Riley Moore Introduces Bill to Block Credit Card Tracking of Gun Purchases**
Rep. Riley Moore (R-WV) has introduced the **Protecting Privacy in Purchases Act**, a bill aimed at preventing credit card companies from using a special merchant category code (MCC) to track firearm and ammunition sales. The legislation would also prohibit financial institutions from monitoring these transactions.
According to **WVNews**, Moore’s bill responds to growing concerns that tracking gun purchases could lead to the creation of a firearm registry. Previously, Visa, under pressure from gun control advocates and New York Democrats, agreed to flag gun and ammo sales using a dedicated merchant code. Other major credit card companies, including Mastercard, followed suit.
News reported on March 2, 2023, that Discover planned to begin tracking firearm purchases in April 2023. However, following significant public backlash, Visa and Mastercard announced on March 9, 2023, that they would not proceed with tracking gun sales. Discover also reversed its decision soon after, as reported by **Money.com** on March 10, 2023.
Despite these reversals by credit card companies, some states—**including California**—have implemented policies requiring credit card providers to track firearm and ammunition transactions.
